Good Book: Panda Kindergarten

by Joanne Ryder, photographs by Dr. Katherine Feng
Harper Collins, 2009

School is in session! But this is no ordinary kindergarten class. Meet sixteen young giant panda cubs at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda at the Wolong Nature Preserve. Photographs and text follow the cubs as they are raised and observed by scientists and workers while they learn survival skills that will allow them to be re-released into the wild. SLJ reviewed for preschool - 1st grade.

Cute overload alert!  This book is great for anyone who loves cute animals or wants to learn more about conservation.  I was surprised to learn so many new things about these curious cubs and since they are a conservation reliant endangered species I am thankful for the hard work done at the nature preserve - it's amazing how much time and energy goes into taking care of each cub.

  • Learn more about conservation status.  What's the difference between extinct, threatened, and at lower risk status and what does that mean for a species?
  • Investigate other animals on the endangered species list.
  • Learn more about pandas. Use a database or nonfiction text to gather important facts about pandas and share the information you find in a creative way.
