Good Book of the Week: Bill and Pete

by Tomi de Paola, Putnam and Grosset, 1978
Meet William Everett Crocodile, who spells his name "Bill". Meet Pete, Bill's best bird friend and trusty "toothbrush". Together, they foil a crocodile-hunting Bad Guy, making life safer along the River Nile in his wonderfully funny tale of two memorable friends. Suggested for grades K-2.

I love Bill and Pete!  It has a fun and simple message about friendship and being yourself and cute illustrations.

This book is special to me because I specifically remember Mrs. Prachyl, my elementary school librarian reading, it to my class in 2nd grade.  Every time I see this title it makes me think about my time in the library as a child, and makes me wonder what my students will remember about me someday. We'll see...

We love books!

We had a blast celebrating our favorite reads during Children's Book Week in the library this year. Hundreds of students entered the bookmark contest and tried our special activities. The Macbook photo booth was definitely a big hit - have you seen our photos yet?

Good Book: Orange Pear Apple Bear

by Carole Marsh, Simon & Schuster, 2007

Explores concepts of color, shape, and food using only five simple words, as a bear juggles and plays. SLJ reviewed for preschool - 1st grade.

This is one of my favorite books for kids, the creative word choices and sweet illustrations make it fun to read too.

Good Book: Yummy

by Lucy Cousins, Candlewick Press, 2009
Simple text and bold illustrations tell eight classic fairy tales, including "The Three Little Pigs" and "Little Red Riding Hood."In this bold, funny, and unflinching collection, the beloved author-illustrator retains all the emotion and humor of the original fairy tales: the heroes are courageous, the villains are horrible, and the children are tasty. With her sly, simple language and vibrant illustrations, even the scariest fiends become the stuff of shared hilarity and shivery thrills. Beware -- these fairy tales are not for the faint of heart! Maisy creator Lucy Cousins shifts gears to retell her favorites with vivid, rousing illustrations. SLJ reviewed for kindergarten - 2nd grade.

Everyone loves fairy tales and Lucy Cousins does an excellent job of introducing a few of the classic tales with humor and interest with this book.  Yummy is a perfect edition for teachers introducing the genre, exploring traditional literature, or for reading aloud.
