Good Book: Hippo-not-amus

by Tony and Jan Payne, illustrated by Guy Parker-Rees, Orchard Books, 2004
From the best-selling illustrator of GIRAFFES CAN'T DANCE, Guy Parker-Rees, comes a silly story about a young hippo trying to be everything he's not. Portly didn't ask to be a hippo; he was just born that way. And frankly, he's starting to find being a hippo kind of boring - standing in the water all day up to his eyeballs, eating grass - no fun at all! So he embarks on a journey to figure out just what kind of animal to be, and along the way, meets all kinds of creatures. As he tries to do everything they do, this heartwarming story of a youngster searching for his identity and trying to be somebody he's not will strike a chord with all readers. Repetitive, silly text and bright illustrations make HIPPO-NOT-AMUS an infectiously fun read.Suggested for grades K-2.

And a cute hippo, just for fun:

Here is a story of adventure and discovery -- a story of leaving and returning during the summer of 1969, and a story of home, seen whole, from far away.Suggested for grades 2-5.

Have you tried Overdrive?

New for 2011-2012, Frisco ISD now has ebooks and audiobooks available for download from Overdrive. You might have tried Overdrive from the public library before, our school library collection works just the same.

Overdrive allows all schools to connect and share digital books in one place. Use your FISD library id number to download ebooks (in kindle or pdf format) or audiobooks (as wma or mp3 files) to your computer, kindle, smart phone or e-reader.

Students and parents can check out two elementary level items at a time for two weeks. Teachers can check out two items from any level. All FISD schools share the same Overdrive collection, so if a book you want isn't available just be patient - place a hold or put it on your wish list and try again later.

Download the Overdrive App to search for free books to checkout on your phone or visit the Overdrive website to download books straight to your computer at http://friscoisd.lib.overdrive.com/.

Overdrive can be a little tricky the first time you try it. Don't give up - it is well worth the setup time!
Use the help features on the Overdrive site or ask Mrs. Hamilton or Mrs. Hodges for help.
