FAQs

How do I contact the library?

Reach Mrs. Lokey by email at lokeya@friscoisd.org or by phone at 469-633-3886.

When can I visit the library?

The library is open Monday-Friday from 7:50am - 3:20pm. Parents are welcome to visit anytime after signing in at the office. **Students must be accompanied by an adult after 3:00pm.

Our library operates on a flexible schedule which means--no more waiting until library day--students can come to the library whenever they want or need! Teachers can schedule lessons on information literacy skills that go with what is being taught in the classroom. Small groups, individuals and classes can all visit the library at the same time, anytime, for reading or research.

Teachers should consult the Library Calendar to view events and select times to visit the library with their class.

How many books can I check out?

Kindergarten students = one book in the fall, two books in the spring
1st-5th graders = two books, three books for students who participate in the bluebonnet or 2x2 program
Parents = 5 items for 2 weeks
Teachers = unlimited number of items for one month

If there is a special assignment in class, students may be allowed to check out extra items. Books can and should go home to read each night.

When are books due?

The computer marks all items overdue that have been checked out for two weeks or longer. If you have an item that is overdue you will get a printed reminder slip from the library in your Thursday folder. Students are welcome to keep items longer than two weeks, but don't forget to come to the library to renew your items so they won't be marked overdue. The library does not charge fines for overdue items.

Some students choose long books that take a couple of weeks to read, other students like shorter books that may only take a day or two to finish. Please return books you are finished with promptly since others may be waiting to read them.

What happens if an item from the library is lost or damaged?

Lost books must be paid for in order to clear student records and allow them to check out another book. Once an item has been deemed lost (don't forget to look under your bed first) students will be asked to pay for lost and damaged items.

The library accepts payments online through Funds4Books or you may choose to buy a hard-back replacement copy from a bookstore and bring to to the library. The library prefers not to accept checks because check payments are deposited in the general fund not the library's account - making it difficult to access the money and buy a replacement book right away.

What reading programs does the library sponsor?

Special reading encouragement programs are offered throughout the year for all students. Visit the Library Activities page of this site for more information on the 2x2 Program, Bluebonnet Club, and more! The library also runs two book fairs with PTA each year.

What do students learn in the library?

Research shows that children learn best when they can access information at the point-of-need. Our library program is an extension of the classroom and information skills are taught within the context of the classroom curriculum. All students in kindergarten through 5th grade participate in research units planned cooperatively with teachers and the librarian to learn library skills at the same time as they learn curriculum-related information. This integration strengthens the teaching and learning process allowing students to develop the skills necessary to locate, analyze, evaluate, interpret, and communicate information and ideas.

How can parents get involved?

The library is always looking for volunteers! If you are detail-oriented, patient, and flexible we can use your help. Look for Library volunteer opportunities on the PTA Avenue website to sign-up. Look for opportunities to help with special events, such as Book Fair, through our PTA.

Don't forget - parents can check out books too! We have a special parenting section of the library with great books to choose from or select a favorite children's book to share with your student. In addition, the Frisco Public Library offers weekly programs for parents and children to attend.

What should I do if I have a question?

Please ask! Email or stop by the library. Comments and ideas are always appreciated.
